1.can i set cookies in a php function.

2.actually i am creating a user authentication in php,My need is when an user alreday logged in no one can logged in with same user name and password.

i allready make it when user do all activity properly like sign in and sign out, by useing a flag in database but i just confused on one point when user login and unfortunality or by mistake user close the browser direct or due to any reason system will reboot , then what happend flag not set properly because user not reset the flag and he will not able to login again.

Pls help me.

if u people have any idea pls share with me.

You could use that flag as a datetime in the database, and assume that no session lasts for longer than, say, 30 minutes.

Example: follow this list of events:

Person A logs in -> the flag is set to NOW().
Person B tries to log in with the same user name -> the script checks the flag, which appears to be a recent date/time, so we assume that he is already logged in, and therefor disallow this person from logging in.
Person A logs out -> the flag is set to 0000-00-00 00:00:00
Person A logs in again -> the script checks the flag, which is "000..." and therefore indicates "logged out", and therefore allows the login. The flag is set to NOW().
Person A does not log out properly -> the flag does not change.
Person A tries to log in again within 30 minutes -> he is thrown out for the same reason as in case 2 above.
Person A tries to log in after 30 minutes -> the script checks the flag, which appears to be older than 30 minutes, indicating "logged out", and therefore allows the login. The flag is set to NOW().

The drawback with this is that the user will have to log in again every 30 minutes, and cannot log in for another <30 minutes if he logs out improperly.

i already set these whole things,,

but one problem behind these whole this when user logs out improperly .

for this i think why not i use cron jobs which execute on each 10 minutes and checks the user last logs in time if it will greater than 10 min just reset the flag.
