Stupid file question

I am using fwrite to copy data to a file. Unfortunately the manual doesn't tell how to do this if the file does not exist yet. Am I being dense?

$text = "This is a test of yada yada yada"
$file = "saved.txt";
$p = fopen("$file","rw+")
$write = fwrite($p,$text);
fclose($p);

You've forgotten two ";"
and the fopen is more simple, (unless you want something else than read and write in your file)
Try this:

$text = "This is a test of yada yada yada";
$file = "saved.txt";
$p = fopen("$file","w") ;
$write = fwrite($p,$text);
fclose($p);

But it's even more important to remember that what you've just sketched out is not multiprocess safe! Absolutely nothing but statistical probability and/or dumb luck (your choice) prevents

  if(file_exists('saved.txt')){

from being reached by 2 (or, to be perfectly honest, <i>n</i>) processes at the same time. Guess what happens next? :-(

I'm not sure , because if the file doesn't exist, the script creates it.So if it is a writing operation, there may be no need of that kind of test.
But I'm not sure of what i'm saying.

Good point. Right now I am the only user writing to the db so for me this is a non issue. However, this may change in the future. Since I am a newbie wanna point me to how to make such a think multi-user safe?
