garbled Japanese email

The subject line of an email in Japanese is always garbled.

There's a special conversion required (-->iso2022-JP). Installing the international version of PHP is overkill. Does anyone know of any class or script that does this conversion.

I think that this won't work because it just decodes the header. I need to encode it before sending to others. Further, the header needs to be in JIS(old), so text needs to be converted from shift-JIS to JIS. This is my key difficulty.
However, there are many useful things in the imap section of the manual that I didn't know about.

I just figured this out!

First, you have to encode the Japanese Double Byte to Base64

Second, you have to wrap it in the iso-2022-jp string

Here is an example:

$subject = "something in japanese";

$subject_line = "=?iso-2022-jp?B?$subject?=";

Then use $subject_line as your subject. It works great!
