capacity of php newsletter

Hi there,

I have a quiet simple question. I made a newsletter tool. In principle, it sends the emails via the mail() function, with the adresses taken from a db-table. Up to now, it was used to send it to about 300 emails. This took about 1-1,5 minute. Now I was asked to implement this newsletter tool to a site that manages about 10.000 user, with about 5000 to 6000 that will subscribe to the newsletter. I am not sure, but I think that this may cause some problems. If 300 will take about 1 minute, 5-6K will take 15-25 minutes and the tool will send about several MB of data, depending on the size of the newsletter. Will this shut down the server and in what way do other sites manage this (professionell tools,...) ?

What I did to limit the outgoing trafic is a nice sleep of 3 seconds

sleep(3);

after each mail 30.000 mail they will go slowly out in 24 hour, without causing any problem

Instead of having the web server that sends the mails
I have compiled php not only as an apache module but also as a runtime php
and I run from shell

$ nohup /usr/bin/php < send_mails.php > /tmp/mail.log &
