GD 1.8.3 and transparency

I have GD 1.8.3 and it doesn't support GIFs, right? I'm coding image counter and it can be turn hidden. The only way, I know, to make hidden counter is to make transparent image. How can I do this with GD 1.8.3 if it doesn't support GIFs?

First the good news. libgd can do transparent png images.

Now the bad news. Most browsers still don't support transparent pngs.

So, if you need transparency, you're gonna have to compile against the older libgd versions that supported gif files.
