Running script on server.

Is there a reference on the web or a chapter in a book I can buy that can tell me how to run a script on the server independently of the browser. I saw a snippet about the user bin in another post, so I know that is what I want to do, but have NO expierence with this, so I know I need more explanation than can be given here. I have PHP Programming, but can't find anything about it.
