PHP vs. Perl?

I would like comparisons on the use of PHP vs. Perl for form handling, error checking within the form script and using simple databases.

Maybe a good question would be - I'm a Web designer who knows some Perl for CGI programming (I'm more of a designer than a programmer), are there reasons I should switch to PHP? Two things I like so far, being able to use PHP within HTML and error messages within mail form code being returned along with HTML output (if that made sense).

I'm sure you can do the same thing in Perl, it's just a matter of figuring out how.

You can do pretty much the same things in Perl and PHP. It's just a matter of what language you will learn faster so that you can get to work faster. If you already know some perl, then it might be faster to keep learning that and gear your learning towards web scripting... If you want to tackle a new language, then PHP is fairly easy to learn.

Either way, you can do you job in either language...

I would agree that PHP is much easier to debug programs in since it prints plain english error messages right to the screen telling you which line of which file (include file or main file etc.) has the error and what it is.

For certain large memory model stuff, PHP is just too memory hungry to use, but for any application that can be written in a couple thousand lines of code, it's the bomb.
