Heyas,

Im trying to get a windows machine with apache + php + Mysql going.

I have no programming knowledge and would like to start to learn php. Can people please reccomend me any begginer guides covering both the installation and the programming of php and mysql.

Ive managed to get apache and php working fine but cant get mysql going (I have no idea what to do once id downloaded mysql).

Any help would be appreciated.

I managed to get MySQL running with php and Apache on windows. I can't remember much, but I'm sure I just downlaoded the windoze version from mysql.com (it was quite hefty if I remember right!), and installed it. IT asked for some things during installation, and then I installed a windoze tool (WinMyAdmin? something like that), and when I run it from a shortcut on the desktop, it automatically boots up th MySQL server (I have to start Apache first of course!).

Are you sure you got the Windoze version? Did you put your path to MySQL in your PATH line (I think you had to anyway, in the autoexec?). What happens when you go to the command line and type mysql ? (or was it mysqld? :-\ )

Try downloading that windoze tool, it's quite helpful. I think there's also detailed docs for installing in windoze at the mysql site.

I already had downloaded mysql (all 9megs of its bloated self). I didnt relise id have to have the mysql winadmin blah blah running the whole time (as you have apache running) as a server.

Thanks for the help, ill continue to fiddle.

Is there an easy way to see if mysql is running ? A example that is famous like the 'hello world' php example is ?

Ive done somre more fiddling and now the 'mysqlshow' commands work properly meaning the sql server is going fine now. If anyone can suggest any answers to

Just try connecting to it...

<?php
mysql_connect("localhost", "username", "password") or die("Could not connect to database);

If you get a "Could not connect to database" message, it's not working. If you don't, it connected fine and you can copy examples from sites like these.

Hi Stewart,
go to www.phpgeek.com and download "PHPTriad" (If you have windows oprating system) it will automatically setup all the things you need to run php(PHP,Mysql,Apache).
