$HTTP_USER_AGENT

Im a newbie at php and im just toying with the $HTTP_USER_AGENT command. I cant get it going though :\

I coded the following lines but it wont go for some reason:

<?php
$refer = \"Heya, I see you came from $HTTP_REFERER\";
echo $refer;
?>

Yet the next one, almost the same, goes.

<?php
$browser = \"Heya, I see you are using $HTTP_USER_AGENT\";
echo $browser;
?>

I look in my phpinfo and the $HTTP_REFERER isnt listed...infact there arent a huge amount of these $blahblah\'s listed. How would I go about adding the $HTTP_REFERER command ? Perhaps my $HTTP_REFERER script is simply wrong ?

If you did not follow a link from another page, $HTTP_REFERER will not exist.

I tried going to a url before typing localhost/ref.php so I would have a reffering url but nothing showed up. All that showed was 'you can here from' and not the url where I came from.

Would it not go because im using localhost or something ?

Are you using something other than Apache? $HTTP_REFERER (be sure you spell it that way) is a server variable and may not be provided by other servers.

Im using apache for windows.

Ive upladed a copy of my php info...see if something is wrong please.

I see nothing about refer is under 'Environment'

I'd be guessing. There are two big issues here: One, you're running under Windows, and two, you're running PHP as a CGI. I don't have any background with either of those approaches. I would suspect the CGI implementation first, but as I said, it's just a guess.

$HTTP_REFERER won't show up unless you click a link to get to that page. From what I understand, you are typing in a URL (i.e. http://www.phpbuilder.com/) and then typing in your URL (which seems to be http://localhost/ref.php). Unless you click a link to get to your page, $HTTP_REFERER won't exist.

Still no luck. I made an html page (stored locally) that linked to my localhost/ref.php. Still no luck...all that came up is 'Heya, I see you came from'.

Is my code actually ok ?

It seems to work for me. Try using $HTTP_SERVER_VARS["HTTP_REFERER"] instead of $HTTP_REFERER. While you're at it, give this a shot too:

<?php
echo "Heya, I see you came from ";
echo $HTTP_SERVER_VARS["HTTP_REFERER"];
?>
