Apache on Windows95

I loaded Apache1.3.12 on windows95 machine and installed PHP4 on it.
When i try to run a PHP script from the HTDOCS directory, i get the code displayed on the browser instead of the output.
For Ex: i've a simple php script withone line:
<? phpinfo(); ?>

When this script is run, i see only the above line displayed on the screen, istead of PHP information.

Any help is appreciated.
(i re-installed several times)

Well, obviously php does not get implemented in apache yet... did you copy the php.ini to your systems dir and tweak the httpd.conf in apache/conf/ accordingly?

There is a good article on thickbook.com on installing all under win, however with the newest php releases you should follow the advice in the read_me...

Thanks for your quick response.
I followed exactly the same steps as said in this article(actually the same information is in the book "PHP Fast & easy web development").
Still it doesn't work.
Any ideas?

Well, as said this step by step does not support the newer distributions of php, the steps there are:
Apache:

Unzip the Package to c:\php, now move php4ts.dll to the windows/system(32) directory, overwrite any older file!

Stop the Apache Webserver.
Edit the httpd.conf and put in these lines, modified to your environment:

for the apache module

LoadModule php4_module c:/php/sapi/php4apache.dll
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php4

#for the cgi binary (you can use that one compiled with force cgi redirect too)
ScriptAlias /php4/ "C:/php/"
Action application/x-httpd-php4 "/php4/php.exe"
AddType application/x-httpd-php4 .php

Copy the php.ini-dist to your sysroot (directory where you installed windows), rename it to php.ini, and
edit the php.ini to fit your needs.

Restart the Apache server.

I have done all these lovly things too I can't get the bl**dy thing to work properly.

When I run Apache the dos window seems to indicate that it is OK but when I ask for http://localhost in my browser, I get Error 500 (and the same for 127.0.0.1).

I have edited hosts.sam and I have registered the DNS service hostname: localhost, IP address 127.0.0.1, domain I have left blank as I'm not sure what this might be. Do you think this is the problem?
