How the coomunities detect the users log out?

I mean that a user can exit the site without logging out: e.g. closing the browser...
how can i detect this?

Just store the date and time when the user last visited your page (clicked a link)

If the last click was 30 minutes ago, it's safe to assume the user has left your website.

This is done automatically by sessions. If a session is older than the timelimit you specify in php.ini, it will be deleted (the user is logged out)

i have this idea now:
i create an exract of my registered users of the logged users in a temporary teble where i register : session_id usesr's settings, and datetime of his log.

How do i update his datetime log?
( every time he makes a select of one of his settings in that table?)

And how can i check the logs older than 30 minutes?

(whenever user logs i make a function call may be: select_and_delete_entries_with_datetime_older_than30min() [exaustive name uhu?:-)]?)

You can log the user's hit with a sinlge sql statement at the beginning of every page:
(pseudo)
update table set lastvisit=now() where id=session_id()

THen you could also include a cleaner at the top of every page:
delete from table where lastvisist<date_sub(now,interval 30 min);
