SCRIPT LICENSING

hi guys,
i have posted a few scripts to my website. they have become pretty popular and im thinking of adding some sort of license to them. i'm definately thinking GPL but i dont know what is required to make it valid. eg) something at the top of every page of code, one license doc in the tar file, etc..

if anyone could give me some suggestions i would appreciate it.

First you want to somehow make a statement that they are yours:

are two good meta tags to use.

Also use the copyright at the bottom.

Also, register it with the Library of Congress. It doesn't cost much and if you do it before others rip off your copyrighted material, you get them to pay your legal fees in court.

Patenting is a whole other issue, but thats massive $$$ and a 2 year wait with the USPTO.gov

GPL means General Public Licence: Free.

I wouldn't bother patenting/licencing a script
unless it is very complex, if you put months and months of developing into it.
Why? because 99% of all scripts on the web are simple and do the same things.

If you try to licence a script that simply reads data from a form and emails it, you're just one of the many who have written such a script, and people will simply pass you by.

If you really want to protect your script, use the zend encoder thingy. But that also makes your script un-editable, so whoever "buys" your script will have to rely on you to make any required changes.

I'd definately go for GPL, and forget about making money.

hrm...
i didnt say anything about selling my scripts. they are free, i just want to keep them that way. isnt that the point of GPL?

i ended up going to fsf.org and getting the info i needed there. thanks for your suggestions.

what a great observation! fortunately that site isnt live. i made no claim that it worked. the code for that site is not what i was licensing anyway. keep up the good work!

talking about good work, your article api seemed really cool, now I only need the page which requires it and hope that you GNU it ... (never really understood the differenz between GNU and GPL)
