Changing a fields value.

I've looked through the search engine and i can't find anything like this (sorry if there is!).

I'm rather new and for all i know this is a really dumb question, but is there a way to change the value in a filed? It needs to be seen to the user that it has changed.

E.g There are two fields (not hidden or anything), they need to total up to 10. If the user enters 4(in field one),is there anyway the other (fieled two) can display 6? Then if the user goes and changes the 6 (field two),to say 8, can the original field (field one) change to 2?

If you want to do it without submitting the form, you'd have to use javascript.
