We are located in the UK with servers in the US. We run PHP4.0.4pl1, give root access to MySQL on most accounts. CGI telnet etc...

Why do you need a host in the uk? The internet being all world wide and stuff.
I'm in the uk, and currently use uklinux.net, but I'm about to switch (probably) to phpwebhosting.com in the states because they offer a good package. And it really doesn't matter where the box is physically located.
As for your company Mr. Casey. I've seen you promote yourself here a few times, so today I took a look, I don't believe you can match the package that phpwebhosting is offering.
If you can I'd be interested to hear from you, and you may just gain my business.
Hi
I don't try to promote us by spaming only if people ask. I do also post here and several other places to support other php/mysql users
We don't try and match anyone else, phpwebhosting offers unlimited bandwidth. That as any sensible host will tell you is not possible and in the end somebody suffers. Somebody has to pay for it. All that happens is some users are subsidising others. If somebody goes over the fixed limit they either get billed or the account scrapped (I don't know who phpwebhosting deal with high BW sites I am just saying in general)
We offer far more then most hosts. We offer customers root access to their own mysql database, the latest PHP with a wide range of configured options, SSH etc....
We offer a good service for people that require it. We can't cater for everyone. Our prices are fair and reasonable, our service level is high and we have a lot of happy customers. If customers require unlimited bandwidth or diskspace then we are not for them.
We are in business and price our packages accordingly. Too many web hosts try to be the lowest on price and offer too much for the price they charge. Then down the line they go out of business and leave their customers high and dry. While low prices seem good for customers the truth of it is they are not when a company is offering too much.
We intend to grow and offer our customers a good service. To do this we don't try and match everyone else. Customers come back time and time again and bring their friends with them.
Depending on your needs phpwebhosting might be better for you, it all depends.

Darren Casey
Darren (Casey),
First off let me apologise. I gave you the impression that I was flaming you for spamming, I was not. As you have stated, you only ever mention it when people ask if anyone knows of a PHP/MySQL host (which as we both know is practically a daily occurance!).
If I ran a hosting company I too would promote it.
I would also agree that you do seem to offer quite a good package. I was merely pointing out that in my case an offshore host seemed a better option, and that given the nature of the internet Darren shouldn't limit himself to looking at UK based providers (unless he needs dial-up).
Most users would never need 'unlimited-bandwidth' and if they did, they certainly wouldn't be in a postion to worry about price. Price to me is important as I am looking for a host for my personal site (and for the sites of my family).
The attractive options to me in the phpwebhosting package:
- unlimited pop3 mailboxes
- max 125 users per server
- unlimited MySQL databases - not needed, but I like to keep sites in seperate dbs (I believe you offer this too)
- minimum of 125Mb space (I'd never need that much) expandable at no cost.
- connected to 3 backbones of which 2 belong to the biggest providers(in my opinion) in the States.
Once again, please allow me to re-iterate thgat I have no intention of slagging off your services or your posts to this forum; my intention was purely to give my opinion on the host I think suits my future needs.
Regards,
-- Nick Gushlow
Darren's fine, after all that's my name I didn't think you were "slaggin" us or our services off
Sorry if I gave that impression.
I realise that I just wanted to point out we don't spam. I see time after time hosts just posting about their service when they put nothing to the group or forum.
We offer the unlimited POP accounts (for a fee) the fee comes for 2 reasons, one an additional IP address is used (Which we have to pay for) secondly customers with more then one POP account are likely to use more bandwidth. But not offering it with every account means that one customer who doesn't need it won't then be subsidising the customers who do. We also don't put a limit on the number of POP accounts. But then pophostings offer of 125 should be more then enough
Because on the larger packages we offer root access to MySQL it means you have full control of the databases and the grant tables that control access. But the smaller accounts only come with one database per user.
They offer some great features. We find that we are used mostly by three different types of customer, firstly the developer, the smallest account provides a great testing ground, secondly the smaller web design company. The larger ones use our reseller package, and thirdly by normal net users who require a small home on the net.
Seeing as we both have money back offers you can't loose no matter what option you go for :p

Darren
Well I'm glad you didn't take offence at my comments.
Unforunately I think I will personally use the 'other' company as it can cater for my specific needs at a lower price. However, time will tell. I do not have any friends or colleagues that use them, so they might well be awful. In which case I shall come knocking on your door.
Regards,
Nick.
Hi, try www.bestukhosts.co.uk, it's not a hosting company, but you can search for and compare hosting packages. Make sure you select PHP in your search! Also, BTW using a non-UK host can mean your pages don't come up in google's "search UK pages" results, even if you have a UK domain. But then again some people say that's not true t all!
