I've noticed that if I've got two browsers open on the one computer browsing
a site using sessions then they have the same session id.(one is a child browser windows of the other)

I can't rely on the users opening a whole new browser process.

I need to have different sessions for each browser window. Is that possible?

otherwise variable propergation using sessions is useless, for a computer where multiple browser windows are being used.

is there a id belonging to the browser that I can use?

anybody got any solutions?

There is a possibility, not the best, but it is one.

You can use a variable named "UNIQUE_ID". Look at the output from phpinfo() and you will find it. It is unique for each request!!! You can use it to divide your session into several parts, one for each browser-window.

Save it and ensure that every new request contains the (saved) unique id as a parameter to identify the part of the session concerning the browser-window.

It is not the best solution, but it's worth to try.

It would seem to me that your problem is more of a design issue than a coding issue.

That isn't really a constructive comment for the developer. It has little to do with design or coding... and more to do with user preferences. The user can open as many windows as they wish when browsing a site. I'll often have multiple windows open, and I've gotten into the habit of right-clicking on most links and selecting "open in new window". Just goes to show you never can tell what a user's going to do.
On the other hand... I'm not altogether sure, if a user had more than one window open, why you'd want a different session in each window. It would seem to me to be a <b>good</b> thing that the session id was the same. That way, if I <i>did</i> right-click on a link to open a new window, I wouldn't have to log on a second time to see the content I was trying to access.

Servo, the problem is that each window represents a different state of the session. In one window the user might have entered some information into a form and posted it.
In the other window he then might edit the same form and post it again thus overriding the original post etc... Especially in a process where the user must fill out more than one form to complete a process, this can be rather cumbersome. The session variable state becomes something entirely different to the browser window state. This can be a mega headake indeed. I am fishing for a good solution. If anybody knows of one I'd appreciate a hint.
