It's an old subject, I know, so forgive me if this FAQ fodder.
The problem I have is that I am trying to persuade a network administrator to upgrade the GD version to the latest release, so as to have PNG and JPEG support. To do so wipes out GIF support, and this may affect those who are presently relying on that (it isn't yet clear how many users even need the GIF support). It needs to be done eventually, but current projects cannot be disrupted too abruptly.
My question is, are there recommendations for such a migration? I know there is a windows version of a module that includes GIF support along with JPEG, etc., but I don't think that would be acceptable in this case.
Also, does the latest GD lack support for reading GIFs or only for writing them? For instance, does GetImageSize now return an error when passed a GIF file? I gather that GIFs can still be read, judging from the following post:
http://www.phpbuilder.com/forum/archives/2/2000/7/1/100668
And it also seems that ImageGIF is the only PHP4 function that would be used to write a GIF. In that case, our site could be searched for scripts that use that function to get an idea of how big a disruption the upgrade would be.
Is any of this on the right track?
Thanks for any advice,
