PHP Editors

I know this comes up a lot, but it's always good to ask, since new versions do come out 😉

What are the best PHP/HTML editors for Linux? And what about Windows?

It seems like whenever I try a new one, it annoys the living daylight out of me so I end up using Windows Notepad or vi... Some DECENT editor would be nice, if anyone knows of one... or do I have to go make one myself?!?

For Windows, I use Allaire Homesite. Despite the uninspiring name its a damn good editor.

The syntax highlighting is a little buggy but I'm told thats better in the new version.

I like Arachnophilia. It's a freeware (careware) editor. It's got a lot of features and few bugs. It has different editor modes for different types of files (html, cpp, js, java, etc) and highlights differently for them. The version I have doesn't have a php mode but I haven't updated it in half a year or more. Might wanna check it out.

I recently started using Quanta and I really like it http://quanta.sourceforge.net/ it's for the K Desktop Environment. I highly recommend it. Good Luck

TextPad (textpad.com) is good inexpensive one for Win32. It has serveral PHP related things like code snippets and good macro support. Free eval and $27US if you like it.

hi,

to all the php wizs out there
strange, after going through all the message.
i haven;t seen any one mentioning about Editplus.
its just amazing.
you all wont believe it has many, many, features.
its like a editor for programmers irrespective of any language
you can write c, c++, java, perl, php, html, sql, csharp,
and many many more.
the best part is that
syntaxs file (.stx) check the syntax. of any lang/plsql/mysql. etc.
auto complete (.acp) type for and a space and get the for contruct ready
even u can create new auto complete functions. like type my and a space
my function comes up
and many many more features like ftp, open remote. save remote,
multiple / single instance of program. multiple files.
find and replace across multiple files open. etc etc.

again i would strongly recomend it you can also buy it but you can find a crack
also.

i use it since more than a 1 and happy with it.

EditPlus is a gread editor for most programming tasks. I've been using it for PHP for a while now, and it's definitely better than Notepad! :-)

Actually editplus has come up quite a few times :-)

I use it on windows (yes, I use windows... my customers remand it... what can I say...)

On linux Kwrite is simple and fast. Syntax highlighting is tricky though.

And ofcourse good old VI is any programmers dream!

I'm also an Ultraedit user. I love the feel and the features. It has some weaknesses that say, emacs doesn't, but it suits me fine.

Without doubt on Windows Ultraedit is the best., I use for Java PHP Perl WML etc... no problems.

I really like the fact that Ican set up a project and launch customa pplications from the menu within Ultraedit. i like the fact it is more or less fully customisable and have yet to find any major faults with it. I've been using it for 3 years now.

On linux/*nix I always use Vi - it's the only one you can guarantee is going to be there

Cooledit comes with Mandrake 7.2 and supports a number of languages including PHP. It's fast.

Hi folks,

I have to slip in my 2 cents here on what I think is the best web technology editor out there, 1st Page 2000.

It runs on windows of any flavor, and is free. There is a new version that should be available by april that will have a load of new features like built in IRC chat, and different modules for different languages.

You can download it for free at www.evrsoft.com, and they will have new forums there for your perusal soon!

(I don't work for them, I just love 1st Page 😉 )

Sorry, but I write my programs in Winbugs altought just to upload them to the real server, and the best editor I've found arround FOR PHP PROGRAMING is PHPed, wich colorcode is almost perfect and has a lot of helpfull things for the PHP programmer like help in tooltips, just press F1 and get the PHP manual page for that command, built in FTP (sorry, without proxy) to edit files from your server on the fly, you can sincronize your local files with the server's and now it has a program monitor if you have installed PHP on your win machine etc etc.

It also do it well to edit perl, C, Mysql, but it's main target is PHP files.

Belive it or not last versions has more bugs (after all is an alfa version), but you can grab an older one from http://www.soysal.com

Me and our team of programers are fans of PHPed, and did I forget to mention that it's free?

Hi.
I agree.PhpEd is one of the best.Integrated debugger and a lot of futures.
I spend 2 weeks to found a good editor.My search at this point has this list:
Html Kit-> www.chami.com -Excelent for HTML and PHP ,but not targeted on php.
PhpEd->www.soysal.com -curetly I use'it.Excelent for PHP.
ASPN KOMODO1.1 ->www.activestate.com (Linux free And windows free for personal use.)It's professional(but not for me he.he) .Debugger included.
Php Coder -nice but buggy.->www.phpide.de It's just borned but promise.Since PhpEd it's not free anymore(at this time a version is still so hurry!!!)
we can give'it a chance.
And the last borned same to be PhpEdit ->www.phpedit.com .Not tested very much but promise.Have a lot of bug's but the full release is just canditate 1.
