Inconsistent SENDMAIL / PHP performance

Has anybody out there had experience with calling sendmail via PHP?

Specifically, on our mySQL-driven site, we use sendmail to process emails out to users based on dynamic mySQL queries which are moderated by PHP.

Ourproblem is that performance is very variable on a minute-by-minute basis with no rhyme or reason we can see.

Sometimes the response is near immediate. Other times it takes a minute before the user is reset to the page they were on before.

Has anyone else experienced (and hopefully solved) this?

You should queue up your messages and have a cron run every 30 seconds to send the actual emails, that way the users arn't stuck waiting for the script to continue to execute.

Are you using the mail() function or a sendmail command?

We use the 'mail' command in PHP 4.0.4

For example:

mail ($t_assignee,$subject_s,$mailbody,$addl_hdrs);

I like the cron idea. Thanks!
