Wanted LARGE SITES USING PHP

Hi everyone!

I am looking for large sites, the larger the better, that use PHP. I am trying to justify using PHP and mySQL.

Any assistance is appreciated, so send them in!

I can't help you justify using MySQL, but freshmeat and this site use php. All of mycomputer.com uses php. Just how big did you want?

Not sure what you mean by large. Large as in expensive, large as in packed full of functionality or large as in big corporation?

Trying to justify using PHP at some companies is also an issue for me (and I'm sure many others) so you are not alone.

The largest corporation I know of using PHP is philips electronics (www.philips.com). This probably isn't the largest site, not sure what is. Oh yeah, I think generali is a resonably sized insurance company - we just gave a php4.0 and mysql course there and they are really into using it, 'large' :-)

mysql would have some pretty large black marks. I use and develop for it but it really doesn't cut it as a 'real' database. The list of core SQL features that they don't support is annoying enough that I really wouldn't consider it for 'real business' (foreign keys, sub selects, views, transactions (well, you could use the berkeley extensions)). These omissions will probably result in condemnation from developers who have worked on a real RDBMS.

Postgres on the other hand has some decent arguments for it. There's also Interbase if you need it to be free although I have no experience with it.

Dialpad.com, NASA, SalesLogix.com are among the very large scale users of PHP. Many of these larger sites go against an Oracle backend rather than MySQL.

Hi,

My site www.clubclimate.com, is completly based on PHP & MySQL.

I use it to generate clublistings, nights, products, practically everything on the site is generated from the database.

I even have a web based administration area, where people who have no idea about web design can add items to the site in an easy to use interface.

PHP is briliiant, and MYSQL does everything i need it to do, FAST!!.

It's an excellant link to give anyone who wonders if MySQL is worth using. Personally I've yet to find anything it can't do, though some features that I've never seen a good reason to use are apparently missing.

I don't know of anything that MySQL can't do, even if it does require a little round-the-bend ingenuity.

As for PHP, I can't help but wonder why not to use it 😉

However, www.php.net (duh) and of high note is www.zend.com

The Zend Encoder is highly unique, and it's automatically coupled with the Zend Optimizer which makes a properly designed PHP script as fast as any application there is.

The IDE Zend has come up with seems to be extra-ordinarily good too.

If nothing else PHP is easy to learn. The amount of special training and out-sourcing that can be avoided easily off-sets the price of buying PHP.

Then again, it's kind of easy to offset a price of $0 🙂

Intuit (the Quicken folks) have used PHP for some of their sites. I do not remember which.

MySQL meets most of an everyday users/developers even companies needs. But it is a far cry from a proper database system with true acid properties (Berkeley extensions excepted).

For those people who really need a truly reliable database mysql is a joke. For non e-commerce, web work it excels.
