session_start and cookies

I'm managing in my web site a mix of sessionid and cookies. But i'm seeing that if someone disables cookies also the sessionid will be disabled.
It seems that sessionid is a cookie too.

But the manual says that in php 4 i can set the sessionautostart as default as i done.
An d the session id will be send automatically and trasparently in the url.
So i understand i can read it....

But it works like a cookie why?

Session in php is saved on the server in a directory specified in php.ini. However session id is stored in a cookie on a client. So when a client goes from page to page or whatever server looks up id that is stored in a cookie in order to associate it witha correct information stored in a session directory on a server.

ok so: why if i disable cookies in netscape i won't be able to have my session id browsing my web site?
I can't keep track of the browsing at all

try to disable cookies on NetscaPE AND MAKE A PAGE WITH

?>
IT WILL BE BLANK
HOWEVER I SET session autostart in php 4 with transparent get of session_id in the urls
