ereg array limitation?

In ereg and eregi in the manual it says the result will be an array of exactly 10 elements, no more and no less.

My question is, what if I want more matches than 10?

I'm trying to get a rather long regex string to work one piece at a time, with limited success, but if I get it all to work there will be 31-34 total results. 4 times longer than the restriction...ouch.

Any way to change the limit? Work arounds?

And I've yet to find a truly good indepth explanation of regex, especially as it relate to PHP, anywhere so any suggestions where I can find one would be much appreciated.
