Seek NT4/Linux performance comparison

I am currently running the latest versions of apache/mysql/php on a PIII 384megs ram and windows NT4. I have been wanting to give Linux a try for sometime now but I am wondering if I will get improved performance for my website. Currently my most database intensive dynamic web pages load in .08 seconds. Can I reasonably expect this to improve by switching to Linux on the same hardware?

I suspect that you will improve performance simply by switching to Linux on the same hardware, because you aren't using any of the (integrated) and proprietary features of Windows, just open source stuff.

That is what I was thinking too. I just installed mandrake and I am completely lost 🙂 I did manage to get my internet connection configured but I have no clue how to install stuff. I guess it is time to start learning.

I like what I see so far. It is a nice change from windoze even if I don't know what I am doing yet. I was amazed that installed on my computer with no hardware problems. If I was installing windoze, I would have to reboot atleast 5 times just to get all my drivers installed.

It is not easy to learn Linux it takes a lot of time especially security. Linux is definitely better then NT4, but you'll have to reteach yourself. And get used to the fact that after every program installation you don't actually have to reboot your machine...

Go to google.com and search for Trinity OS - it is a terrific guide by David Ranch on Linux security
Go to www.linuxdoc.org (Linux docmentation project). This site has full blown books on networking, servers, and etc. for free, plus a complete list of howtos.

With patience and dedication you'll be a linux wiz, and you'll never go back to windows...
