You are all nerds who hunker over a computer in your college-dorm room caves. I\\'ve programmed in ColdFusion and ASP (CF being better of course) for a long time now. PhP may be alright to learn, if your main clients are too poor to afford to use a real scripting language. Without any language consistency, tech support, clustering support, or good database connectivity, it will never be as good as ColdFusion or ASP, which have far broader client bases. Sorry suckers!

I usually won't reply to these posts but you really pissed me off. (I'm sure that was your intention) I have a few questions...

And how much did your NT or 2000 Server cost? (I am assuming you use a Windoze Server because you opted to be part of the herd with your scripting language.)

1a. And how many times a week do you reboot it? (I haven't rebooted my Intranet server in 2 months. RedHat, Apache, PHP, MySQL)

1b. And how much RAM does your server have to run the bloated CF or ASP code base? (You can compile in what you need with PHP)

And what were the licensing costs of OS, CF, Database, etc.? (My stuff was all free and I am sure it out performs everything you've got.)

You shouldn't be so closed minded. PHP doesn't come with a pretty wysiwyg editor like ASP or CF does. There are no wizards for the HACK programmer who just wants to get the job done and doesn't care how.

I really can't believe that you call yourself a programmer. Most programmers I know are very willing to learn new things and add them to their skillset.

You call us cheap. Why should I pay for something if I don't need it? I can do anything in PHP that you can do in CF or ASP, I guarantee it.

PHP has room to grow, but it hardly sucks.

In fact, my only peeve about PHP is that it automatically declares variables AND it\'s case sensitive.

Automatic variable declaration OR case sensitivity alone are tolerable but the two make a bad combination.

Is there some built-in option to disable case sensitivity for variable names?

Or perhaps a \"use strict\" type of option to force variable declaration?

Either one would be wonderful, but if they\'re not available, I guess I\'ll have to hack into the PHP code 🙁

If you go to a PHP forum to ask an ASP question, you need to get your head examined.

I wonder what makes you come to a PHP forum in the first place. Could it be that ASP support is so bad that you have to rely on PHP forums to get any help?

That will notify of uninitialized variables with ugly errors.

I like declaring variables on the fly, true it's somewhat a cheap shortcut for just declaring the damn thing, but it saves time in the coding process. Just sucks in the debug.

Yeah, PHP has real problems, only growing from 800,000 domains to about 6,000,000 today in little over a year (src: Netcraft).

Compare PHP's growth rate with that of CF and ASP. That will tell you all you need to know.

Care to hazard a guess as to how much market share that took from both CF and ASP? Hint: Allaire decided to sell out to Macromedia and MSFT has announced a brand new ASP initiative, which some analysts take to mean they have to address ease of use and scalability.

"Allaire can kiss your ass...PhP FOREVER!" I'd expect that sort of confidence. That sounds typical of a PhP hack. I saw PhP on a few small websites, like a small company and a private college. I keep up with those things. But to be honest, there are still very few people who know what PhP is.

Why would my company start firing programmers when they can afford the software and servers? I can imagine that from a company who would have to rely on PhP.
