mySQL install trouble

I downloaded mySQL from their website and unzipped it. I tried to use the WinAdmin interface to begin it, but the screen does not match the instructions, e.g. the buttons are different and my.ini does not look right.

What are the basic steps to install mySQL, e.g. download it, open my.ini file and change something to something else, etc.? What are common pitfalls? What file must I have where, with what information for the thing to work? The documentation and the website are worthless for troubleshooting.

I think I may be missing some info in my.ini file because it only shows

[WinMySQLAdmin]
Server=C:/mysql/bin/mysqld-nt.exe

when it opens in the Admin application.

you will probably also need this line..

basedir=c:/mysql

There is a new version of that that came with the new MySQL release, thats why.

Did you install MySQL as a service?

I don't think I have gotten that far. All I did was download the latest version from mySQL, unzip it and read the readme file. I pulled up the WinAdmin app and it didn't quite match the documentation. Apparently, I need the stoplight icon to change from red to green, but the my.ini file seemed wrong and the app wouldn't pull in anything different.

If you could post a copy of what you have in your my.ini file, I could compare it to what I have.

It is all very odd because I really haven't done anything, but the software doesn't match the documentation.

By the way, novice question, what is a "service"?

Have you ran the setup program? or did you just unzip it?

it looked liek you were running windows nt/200, is that correct?

A service is something defined in NT/2000 that runs as a system "service" it can be started and stopped. Generally it is a program that is a server, such as MySQL. But other Windows system thigns run as a service too.
