test.php - not working correctly

RedHat 7 .... Apache 1.3.12 .... php 4.0.???

On the Inductory tutorial page at www.php.net it says to create a file called hello.php3............

...................saved it to my web directory and tryied to view with Netscape browser and got back exactly what you see above. With IE i got a blank page in the browser.

What could be wrong ?... that tutorial is real lame because it doesn't suggest anything if it does not work.
Comments are greatly appreciated here.

try only this line for test.php or .php3

try renameing the file with just a .php suffix. the server can be configured to recognize either/both.

Like Craig said, It's probably because you are using php 4, but your extension sais PHP3. If you followed the instructions to install PHP4, you probably told your server to recognise .PHP, not .PHP3

Either rename your script to .PHP or configure your server to recognise .PHP3

tried all 3 exensions ... still get back same results. It just give me back the code .. is the proper way to describe this called ... not parsing the code?????

You did edit the webserver's config to handle the PHP files as described in the manual?
Just a quick list of easily made mistakes:
- Did you edit the correct file?
- Did you restart the webserver after the edit?
- Is PHP found be the webserver? check the error logs, maybe PHP doesn't get loaded at all

Thats just the thing ... where do i do the edit? httpd.conf? .... I need a good source to read with detailed instruction ... any tips ... thankyou

Yes it's the httpd.conf.
