I am just exploring the possibiliys of php. I have done some work with perl and asp. What are the advantages of php? Also I just took over a website for my organization. It is on a Unix based machine, if I upgrade the account I will have MySql support. Do I have to ask them to enable php? I am considering moving to a NT server for asp scripts. Any advice would be helpful

Unix, PHP, MySQL, in my opinion, are the best combination you can ever get...

Besides the fact that php and mysql are free software, the documentation and forums about them are really good...

I´ve worked with asp for a short while and just couldn´t get it right... There was not a good documetation, was rellay slow to develop...

And besides, any OS is faster then win NT as a server plataform, especially with IIS...

Dude, stick to the Free software.. you won´t regret

My internet service provider doesn't support php in html files. Is there anything wrong with my settings? If not, how can I get my html file with php to work? When i save the file as phtml, it works but why not with html?

The problem is in Apache (if that's the webserver used) there is an option where you define what extensions go with what MIME type. ".html" has to be explicitly set to PHP's mime type (search httpd.conf for the key ".phtml" or ".php" or ".php3" to see where such a directive should be inserted).

Assuming you don't have control of such options, there isn't anything I know of that you can do about it.

Just stick to using the extensions that work, and everything is smooth from there. No functionality lost by using .phtml rather than .html.

Yeah, I'm sticking to using .phtml but the problem rose when i wanted to have the index.html with php in it. The sever doesn't pick up index.phtml as the first file from the root folder. (I did check whether there is no index.html ot default.html or any of their .htm files.)

Is there a solution?

make the index.html do a meta refresh to index.phtml. Something like:

Also you may want to put a small link on there. Not every browser supports this. However, the main ones do.
