PHP Books??

Are there any PHP books that you would recommend for beginners? I've been developing with asp for about 4 months, but want to learn php, as well. Thanks in advance.

Hi. I am new to PHP as well. After thrashing around in online documentation, I decided to buy a book. I looked at several, and decided on 'Beginning PHP4' by Wnakyu Choi, Allan Kent, and others. Published by Wrox press. I bought it at my local Chapters, I am sure you could get it online.

A Programmer's Introduction to PHP 4.0 by W.J. Gilmore is a pretty good book. It covers a bunch of basic PHP information, and then talks about other advanced stuff.

once you get through the introductory books, i'd suggest the New Riders one by Tobia Ratschiller (sp?). It devotes lots of space to software development theory, which seems like a waste at first but is necessary to make the transition from "hacker" to "developer".

The book I would reccomend is Professioanl PHP programming by Wrox press. I read this book and found it very useful. Don't be mislead by the "Professional" in the title. If you know ASP, this book should be easy to follow. I have written a few PHP scripts accessing MySql within 10 days of reading this book.

I agree. This is the first book I bought on PHP and I had no experience with ASP or dynamic web development before. Now, I find myself pulling it off the shelf all the time as a reference.

If you understand how to program this book skips a lot of the rudimentary stuff and give you a good run down on what you can do with PHP. I also really like the case studies that are included to show you practical applications of many of the subjects the book goes over.

I fully recommend the book "PHP 4 Bible" by Tim Converse and Joyce Park. A beginner in PHP myself, the book is simple to understand, yet thorough. You should be able to buy it from about anywhere--www.idgbooks.com is the URL on the cover...
