how simular is mod_php to mod_perl?

I was reading the docs on mod_perl and one thing that it does is cache your perl scripts in memory - so the performance gain you get from mod_perl means a tradeoff in increased memory usage.

Is this the same case with mod_php? The documentation doesn\'t seem to talk about it, and I can\'t seem to find anyone talking about it on this website, or on geocrawler.com.

If you purchase ZendCache from www.zend.com, that is its sole purpose. Zend has put out a lot of other interesting add-ons, including an encoder and an IDE. Take a look around the site, pretty nice.

so are there any performance advantages to using mod_php versus compiling PHP as CGI?

I've got it as CGI right now and it's quite handy to use at the command line so I can point crontab to it.

There sure are: the php interpreter itself is compiled into Apache, so there's no CGI startup overhead.

Who says you have to choose? You can have both running on the same machine.

Well, as he's inquiring about mod_perl, they are both about the same (in my opinion) it is just a matter of personal preference. The performance advantages that you state (being compiled into apache) are therefore negated, as both are modules for apache (thus the mod_) ...
