Hi Dave:
I just started as well, I've been using these books and like them alot:
PHP: Fast & Easy Web Development by Julie C. Meloni (most of the code is php4, so I've been careful about seeing what works vs what doesn't work under php3). But her book is built to get you up and running quickly.
Professional PHP Programming by multiple authors, published by Wrox. Far more informative and detailed. I've been cross reference quick tasks from Meloni's book with info from this book.
MySQL published by New Riders, author Paul DuBois. I've been trying to get a rapid understanding of MySQL at the same time, and this book has been very useful. it's been a massive switch in terminology from using client-side databases such as FileMaker, 4th Dimension, FoxPro, Access (minimal) to understanding MySQL, but this book has been making the transition fairly rapid.
Between the three, and a post here to figure out how to properly call related data, I will have my first php/mySQL web application done within hopefully three days.
