Is it possible to make an autoresponder?

Hi,

Is it possible to make an mail-autoresponder with php? Eventually on a homepage.

I would like an e-mail address (say: [e-mail]) where people can send mails to. The address should:

1) Send a text back
2) Destroy the received mail
3) Eventually send me a notice that someone has in fact written to this address.

Is it possible at all?

yes it's quite easy if you are on unix., just set an alias in your sendmail configuration to point to the script,
or use a .forward file in the home directory of the 'funny' user to redirect the email data to the script.

Huh? That's almost as easy as unix.

Step 1: get a Linux or FreeBSD box installed.

Well, the problem is that it isn't my server, but my ISP's.

Is it possible to do then?

That makes it a lot harder, but there still may be a way. What is the email setup there? Can you create additional email accounts under your domain? If so, can you also enter forwarding information? And does the ISP have the cgi version of PHP available also?

Secondly, do you have the ability to create crontab entries for yourself? A second possibility, if the above line of questioning leads nowhere, is to set up a separate email box and then fire off a php script at regular intervals to read that email and respond to it.
