inserting and selecting doublebyte char

If there is anyone out there that can help with the problem below, it would be much appreciated.

I am designing a system which must store both chinese characters and english characters. We are using java and DB/2 and storing both the english and chinese in a vargraphic field. However, I am unable to retrieve an english character stored in the vargraphic field and redisplay it properly. I haven't even begun to experiment with the chinese characters yet. Does anyone know how to convert these vargraphic datatype back into a string? Will this approach work?

This is a different approach, but will using the gettext functions work in your situation?

Thanks for the response. I'm not sure which getText method you are referring to. I am using java, so the only methods available are the ones in the resultset object. I am experiementing with getUnicodeStream. I am also experimenting with setting the character into a wrapper object, and serializing that object and saving that object. When I do a retrieve, theoretically, I can stream it back into the wrapper object, and then get the value.

Any other approaches you think might be helpful?
