php email configuration

I have windows me with php 4 installed and a working internet on a compaq computer with an Xitami sercer but...

I have been trying to send emails with php and it simply does'nt work. They said I have to put something in my php.ini file and here is what I did...

[mail function]
SMTP=localhost
sendmail_from=[e-mail]

I have not configured my server with anything having to do with email and I have only been doing php for about 3 weeks so I am somewhat confused at what to do.

Am I supposed to put my IP address in localhost???

You need to either install a SMTP server or use a public SMTP server which accept a connection.

can an xitami server send emails with php?
or are they totally different?

smtp server is a server that sends mail thru the one you wanted. it is really needed...
