SMTP Mail Sending with PHP

I know much about the SMTProtocol, but i don't know anything about connection to a specific server on a specific port, and sending and recieving commands... is there any possibility how to connect to a server?
e.g. mail.hotmail.com on port 25
...

Are ypu trying to connect to your hotmail account in order to have a PHP script 'grab' your mail and send it to you?

What ( specifically ) are you attempting? When you connect to the sendmail port what is the goal?

no... i want my script to send mail... i did such a program in visual basic but in php i don't know how to connect... i would use the sendmail service to send mail not to recieve it (thats what pop is for(110))
an example:

connect to pop.gmx.at on port 25 then type:

MAIL From: [e-mail]
RCPT To: [e-mail]
DATA
Subject: This is a Test

Here begins the real message.
With the <CRLF>.<CRLF> it does end:

PHP has a built in function to send mail. Refer to the mail() function. You will need a mail server running on your machine to use this function.

If you are using a SMTP server with an ISP PHP does support sending mail using this server.
