Learning PHP

Hey all, I'm interested in starting a site similar to www.deviantart.com. This is going to take a lot of work, and I don't expect it to happen overnight, but it seems like php would be the way to go. Are there any good places to start? I've asked else where and they tell me to read the manual on php and mysql or visit sites with lots of confusing tutorials or random articles. What I need is a good starting point or book which will stepwise take me throught to an advanced level of php use, with examples I can use to setup my own site. Any ideas?

I've used the following books and I recommend them to anyone who wants to learn PHP

• PHP Basics
• PHP Bible

(run a search on these books at www.fatbrain.com or www.amazon.com to get the ISBNs and authors)

Obviously the best PHP site, www.phpbuilder.com and you may want to check out www.php.net and read the manual, it tells you a lot of things. Also check out www.linuxgurus.com and www.webmonkey.com

i hate to mention the (cough cough) competition... but devshed (www.devshed.com) has a good series called, i believe, php 101

as for mysql, if you're running a unix like system, try typing

info mysql

and taking the tutorial.

You could also go to www.webmasterbase.com they have a great tutorial for the beginer that takes you into some advancedtopics. Just look under code on the left hand side.

on www.hotscripts.com you can find a lot of portal systems etc..etc, maybe this is a place where you can look for some sample code?
