Sending HTML Mails in PHP

I am sending HTML mails using a PHP3 script.
The recepient gets the mail but there is an additional '!' (exclamation) character that gets inserted into the HTML source.

This character appears randomly, anywhere on the page. Everything else is just fine.

Can anyone tell me why this happens ?
