kernel panic

I have an Asus A7v133 motherboard and a thunderbird 1.2 GHz processor. Linux installs without problems and then during the first boot there is a kernel panic when it is initializing the processor. What could be causing this? Before installing linux, I installed windows to test out the machine, and everything worked fine

I have exactly the same setup. I'm surprised you managed to install Linux at all without messing with it. The problem is probably the promise controller. Are you using that?
Try finding the help group for your distro. and checking out thier workarounds for ata100
The problem is you have to tell it where to find your hard disk and then once your in edit the grub boot method so it does it automatically.
But again, the best place for you is the correct help group for your version of LInux.
