Newbie Apache and MySQL que

Hello,

with my Windows background, I have a few simple questions that have come to mind as I now have to set up a PHP application on a Linux machine.

How do I change the root password of MySQL-server? (I suppose I cannot do it directly from the phpMyAdmin...)
How do I configure Apache to recognize index.php as a "default document" to look for when only the folder is requested from the browser?
How do I configure Apache to disable directory browsing on all directories?

To change the mySQL root login, there are instructions in the mySQL installation docs. To sum them up...

1) get a terminal session going
2) log into a mySQL session
3) update the user table
4) use mysqladmin to "flush" security settings

I highly recommend reading the docs on this however. It goes into detail and also contains the explanation on how to fix it if you accidently lock yourself out. Although I have no idea why anyone would accidently mistype a password and lock themselves out of root user access. looks sheepish

Since #1 has already been answered, let me answer 2 and 3.

2) Add "index.php" to httpd.conf to the DirectoryIndex directive

3) Remove "Indexes" from each Options directive you find in httpd.conf (or only certain Options directives if you want to limit this for certain portions of the web server. If you wanted to limit this to one directory and subdirectories, it would probably be best to add "Options -Indexes" to any existing .htaccess file in the directory or make that file and place that line inside it.
