I'm an ASP developer wanting to find a really good 3 to 5 day course on PHP. Having no luck finding anything. Anyone have any ideas who may be holding PHP courses. There is nothing at thinq.com at all.
Thanks.

I would imagine it would probably be hard to find this type of course. Reason being, no one is making any money off PHP, as a langauge itself(with the exception of Zend), so there isn't really a need for this type of training, certianly not as much as ASP where the money flows like honey(Micorsoft) and everyone and his brother want to make money.
I think I speak for most of the php programmers here, that the best way to learn php is by doing it. I know I am self-taught in PHP. Get a good book, and learn by trial and error.
You're right that courses are hard to find. However just because the language is free to use really has no bearing on the potential for those that are experts in it to make some money by offering training courses.
I've learned practically everything by reading the books and hands on experience. However there are times when an actual course would be nice and this is one of those times.
http://www.php.net is the best solution.
I learnt everything about php from there.
I appreciate the URL's etc. However I have all of those. I want a course taught in a classroom/lab. Online resources are great but to clarify one last time, I don't need to discuss the merits of self learning / books / online material..........I use all of those resources.
However for this, I want a course. And regardless of some of the apparent dislike for any company that makes money in the open source community, making money is NOT evil. We call it free enterprise and it is what differentiates us from Cuba.
Of course making money is not evil, thats how we live in this world. I just meant you will probably not find too many "official" courses offered in PHP. And on second thought the reason why is probably that all the php programmers that worth a sh*t are too busy working to have any spare time to teach a class.
You just missed it

give me $500 and you can stay in my guesthouse for a week. i'll teach you, fool!
I have to agree with Louie on the 'teach yourself', it's easier that way in my opinion. Just trial and error!
Those of you posting negatives here should look in the mirror twice. You used to be a newbie once right? So instead of criticizing someone for wanting to take courses, why not try to help each other.
Those 2 people, Louise and Michael, go to Mars..you two should be ashamed of yourselves for such language and poor workman attitudes.
I have only known some PHP for 2 months now and still struggling, it would be so much easier to learn it from an instructor from a newbie point of view.
BTW where are your manners folks? Remember you were once a newbie, instead of being mean, be helpful. Otherwise, don't say a thing at all...
Thanks!
if anyone is posting something in the wrong place it is you. you have flame starter written all over you and to be honest, the people who use this forum and this site in general are not the type that would endorse a class or take time off from their $120/hour job to teach a course! especially when their hot new killer app is almost done.
if you are going to make it your duty do censor the internet of the word $hit and any hostility whatsoever to anyone, maybe YOU should be the one to go to mars and start up your own network there.
any my offer still stands!! $500, and i'll sit down with your for a day... that was honest and nice... if you are refering to my use of the word 'fool' it is a common term used interchangably with 'friend' or simply used to end any sentance for people who have spent more than 5 minutes outside their house without their mom holding their hand. I'm glad to see that aol still had one good nick left, kewlphper. good day.
Michael Kristopeit...
I was defending Craig because of your inflaming remarks.
My post was not "flame starter".
When you posted your message and called a person(in this case Craig) a name, that's flaming.
Craig and I are 2 different people, and yes you were offensive to Craig. Plus, I don't endorse filthy langauage.
I don't need you to teach me, I wouldn't even go near you with your attitude like that and of course I wouldn't pay you a dime, there are many professionals out there that are happy teaching for a living.
As for the terms "fool" and "friend" they are 2 different meanings. Look them up in the dictionary.
As for you calling me a 'nick" that's inuslting regardless of what service I use. Here you are "flaming" me now...
WOW, so you still hold your momma's hand. Good!
I can't resist this one, so kewlphper where is it I said anything derogatory about anyone, I was merely explaining the reasons why you don't see courses offered online, I didn't suggest anything negative about Craig, and the word sh*t, come on, it wasn't even directed at Craig, you need to loosen up.
Furthermore, your ignorance shines through with this one
As for you calling me a 'nick" that's inuslting regardless of what service I use. Here you are "flaming" me now...
He didn't call you a "nick", he referred to your nick, or your nickname(kewlphper), why don't you try looking nickname in the dictionary.
This is not needed all of us here are just trying to have fun with a fun proggramming language and now there is arguing. If you ask me it is no one's fault and is clearly an issue that does not even need to be debated about.
As for php courses I wondered over that as well some colledges give cgi courses but that is all I know.
Thankyou,
Mark

IS THAT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!?!
#My post was not "flame starter".
WELL THIS IS
#When you posted your message and called a
#person(in this case Craig) a name, that's
#flaming.
WTF DID I CALL HIM?!? YOU AREN'T THAT BRIGHT.
#Craig and I are 2 different people, and yes
#you were offensive to Craig. Plus, I don't
#endorse filthy langauage.
DOESN'T THE POPE RUN A FORUM YOU COULD MODERATE??
#I don't need you to teach me, I wouldn't
#even go near you with your attitude like
#that and of course I wouldn't pay you a
#dime, there are many professionals out
#there that are happy teaching for a living.
YOU WOULDN'T PAY ME BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T AFFORD ME, NOT BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T WANT ME.
#As for the terms "fool" and "friend" they
#are 2 different meanings. Look them up in
#the dictionary.
SORRY FOOL, NOT WHERE I COME FROM. IN SOME CIRCLES THE TERM 'STANKY CRACKER' MIGHT MEEN SOMETHING ELSE, SO TAKE IT HOW YOU WILL.
#As for you calling me a 'nick" that's
#inuslting regardless of what service I use.
#Here you are "flaming" me now...
OK, SO LETS SEE, ABOVE YOU STATED USING NAMES WAS BAD, AND NOW I CAN'T YOU NICKNAMES... SO I GUESS THIS MESSAGE IS DIRECTED AT 'HEY YOU!' BECAUSE ANY IDENTIFYING NAMES ARE BAD... EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW YOU NEED A PRIMARY KEY, FOOL.
#WOW, so you still hold your momma's hand.
#Good!
DAMN YOU ARE DUMB, I WAS STATING THAT I DIDN'T, AND THUS UNDERSTOOD THAT NO OFFENSE WAS MEANT IN MY STATEMENTS... I THINK A GOOD DICTIONARY, SOME ENGLISH CLASSES AND SOME TIME IN THE STREETS WOULD KEEP YOU OUT OF A LOT OF TROUBLE...
IF YOU NEED SOME ENGLISH CLASSES I'LL SIT DOWN WITH YOU FOR A DAY FOR $500, FOOL.
Craig,
I've learned throughout the past year with books, online documentation and browsing forums. However, I wouldn't mind taking a class, as long as my company pays for it
That sums it up nicely. 90% of what I have learned has come from books, online resources etc. but it is nice to actually have some classroom teaching at times. In particular, when you're responsible for some fairly large internet/intranet sites and applications it's reassuring to get a kickstart from an experienced teacher when trying different technologies.
One way or the other I'll get into PHP albeit I am quite comfortable with ASP.............always good to learn something new.
Hello Craig,
We are just setting up a training centre. Due to open in 3 weeks and one of the courses we intend to offer is one in php. A php boot camp here in England.
Thanks for raising this I feel the same way, its wonderful to learn entirely by trial and error alone - but the story of civilisation and learning suggests that there are more efficient ways of doing it such as getting a damn good teacher.
