is this a bug in date function

$firstday = date( 'w', mktime(0,0,0,2,1,2001));

return 2 for tuesday

should be 4 for thursday

Do anyone have another way to get the day of the week?

Looks like the day and month parameters have been swapped somehow.
What you did is just what the manual said, but
jan 2nd 2001 was a tuesday
and
feb 1st 2001 was a thursday.

What version of PHP are u using?

I tried it and PHP returned 4, however you maybe mixed up day and month, since:

2. Jan 2001 -> Tuesday (2)
3. Feb 2001 -> Thursday (4)
