Slow sendmail

Sendmail is very slow when using the mail() function from PHP. There is a delay for about 30 seconds.

Sending mail using pine or mutt in the shell works fine.

What could be wrong?

I'm using Apache 1.3.14, PHP 4.05 and Sendmail 8.10.2. Apache runs as nobody.

i don't know why it is slow. but if you want to that the mail is send quicker you could use smtp.

Run sendmail by hand and use the -q[time] switch. It tells sendmail to queue up the mail and process it every [time] period.

Use 'man sendmail' on a unix box to see all the options.

Calling sendmail directly (also from a shell), causes the same problem: Delay for about a minute. The -q switch doesn't help.

I've noticed that sending mail to my an address at the same server that my PHP is running, works just fine.

Using Pine also works fine, to all addresses.

Your server most likely tries to do a reverse DNS lookup.

Do you have an ISP. Then update the configuariont file for Name server names(ip) in your machine.
