Max execution times

Just wondering what you all considered to be acceptable execution times for most scripts. I'm doing page generation in conjunction with a MySQL database, and I'm getting times ranging from .1 to 7 seconds. Obviously, some are less than desirable. Please keep in mind that these are executing in CGI mode on a 750 pentium, 256 MB mem, Win2k, IIS 5, with Winamp, Photoshop, and a whole plethora of other progs running at the same time, so I obviously am not getting maximum performance.

What would you all consider the cutoff for a simple database hit-and-return page? What can I do to increase performance?

on my own (linux) box it takes about 8-10 miliseconds to generate a simple database extracted page

(dual P2 366/256Mb mem, normal ide disk)

And about max execution... i think that changes as wheter the info on the page is simplistic or very detailed.

for instance, for my main index page i use a generation time of maximum of .5 seconds but i have pages on my site that take up to 10 seconds generation time. But those pages contain very detailed scematics/drawings all dynamically generated.

also, when you use a browser like netscape, execution time of your script will always be higher the when using internet explorer. (IE simply is faster in loading the page then netscape is) however this will not effect the actual execution of the php (I think... never tested it 🙂)
