Here goes...

I in the process of creating an online lowest price site similar to pricewatch.com. I know i will need and interface for the merchants to sign up with and also list their products. The fields will be stored in the database.

From a vistitors view , i will need the visitors to be able to mouseover the main category and get a list of subs that when clicked on, will run a query on the db returning the rusults of the product in which they clicked on. This all sounds so easy, however, i am not even finished with my "PHP fast and easy" book. How long should this take me to do? Or, if i paid someone to do it, what should it cost??

Don't be contract-happy.

It will cost you an arm and a leg and you won't learn any PHP so you'll never be able to do it yourself.

I created such a site (www.ocprices.com which is currently moving house so it's not in the shape it should be in) and it took quite some time to get it all done (and I know PHP a lot better than you 🙂 )

Just do what you can and when you run into trouble, contact the forum (or me directly) and we'll help you as best we can.

And to of you offering your services: I hope you were joking. Too many PHP beginners have been conned to pay large sums of money because they couldn't estimate the size/cost of the project properly.

OCPrices was a 'spare-time' project so it took several months to build.
But like so many projects, this one will probably never be really 'finished'.
There are still a million ideas waiting to be implemented.

It's all MySQL driven but it will soon be ported to PgSQL.

My suggestion to plan this task:

Plan and code the HTML design; mouseover/layer with dummy content.
If not yet done, design and implement the database and fill the table with some test records.
Locate the place in your code where you want dummy data to be replace with db-generated data. Write the SQL statement you will need to get the data.
Rename the .html file to .php, insert php code above the dummy data, write the db query and the output replacing the dummy data.
...

http://www.ocprices looks to much like PHPnuke...I want an original site. There wont be any dynamic content, just a DB that get queried by the visitor, the tables will be filled by the merchants who want to have there products listed. I will also need a shopping cart, which i seen the code listed i think either here or DEVSHED..Like i said before, i know what i need done is pretty strieght foward, im just a newbie. Im currently reading PHP fast&easy web dev. I do already know a lot about site dev..I still have'nt seen any prices listed..

"There wont be any dynamic content"??! you query a database that is filled by merchants! Don't you plan any corrections to the datas? And when a product is sold out? Don't you plan to remove it or to mark it as "sold out"? Maybe the prices never change? How do you think to take up to date your datas? It seems to be very dynamic .. i think
