SSH help?

A friend just got a dedicated server, and I've set up a user "danny", and have set the home folder to "/home/dir" (using Webmin).

When I ftp in, I don't have access to write in the /var/www/ folder.

How, using Webmin or SSH (I've never used SSH, but I assume I may need it), can I give a user permissions to this? (or a group, cos there's more than just the one user).

Odds are the 'home dir' you set was actually the ftp root for the particular user. FTP sessions are chroot()'d to the specified dir so a client session cannot step higher up the filesystem tree than the 'home dir'. If you can't get it to work by changing the FTP root, try using the SSH sftp client - if the server is configured properly, it should support sftp via SSH v1 or v2. sftp requires no further configuration. Well, it doesn't require any but it's a good idea to read the man pages and tighten it up...
