Checking for fonts?

What I want to do is user a font, which is not a common font.

I figured that I should check if the font is installed, and according to that redirect the user to a 'font-download page' of just continue with the rest of the site.

The problem is: how do I detect if a font is installed??

All help would be appreciated!

OT: I wonder how many people would bother to install a new font on their system just to view a site....

I am having the same problem. I need to check to see if a font is installed. If it is not I have an easy install exe that will run and install it for them.
I would appreciate the same help

if it's not a very special font, then why don't you just use a different font?

The fonts I use are sometimes the only ones that fit with the greatest clarity.
I'd rather not limit the graphics or forms to just the few everyone will have. I have a way to easily put them on a machine just not check for them.

Well I'm glad that the rest of the world uses the standard fonts so that I don't have to spend time downloading fonts all the time and ending up with 40 extra fonts intalled just because I visited some websites where the designer thought a different font would be better...

There are (rare, i know) cases where a certain font is essential and it has to be used as a font not as an image.
