Why PHP is not Getting Popular ???

Hi all,
Every body used to ask me ..why PHP is not getting Popular ??
As India is a very big market of internet technologies but very few people are using PHP and even no one knows about this language... If it is A GOOD Scripting language as I have already got a good experience of it.. Why People are not using it as frequently as they use ASP and Servelets ??? Why Why and WHY ???

Because...

1) PHP doesn't have a mareketing budget like Microsoft.

2) PHP is a relative newcomer when you compare it to languages like Perl and Python.

3) Microsoft hasn't mentioned PHP (its mentioned Apache, Perl, and Python, but for some reason, they haven't yet compared their ASP to PHP, probably because they no better) and therefore, the press haven't jumped on it.

4) It is slowly gaing populariy, do a search on dice.com for jobs with PHP in them..and you will see its growing.

5) PHP3 was more a play language, and it hasn't been until PHP 4 that we can really start taking it seriously.

6) Windows support is still inadequate. Whine all you want that Windoze sucks this and Business that use it are st00pid, BUT!, remember, its these same businesses that use Windows that DON'T care about supporting any Movement like the Open Source movement as much as they care about supporting their own business that are making the decisions. And if their office is running on Windows, well, guess what. And until Linux gets a decent desktop version out that is as easy to learn AND use as Windows (average users don't care what a kernel is, don't care for command line, and like GUI's, which are the reason computers are so popular...), Microsoft will continue to dominate the business Desktop and Home user dept. And that means Businesses will continue to use MS Office, and its a lot easier to install a Win2k server (which is actually a good OS), cheaper to maintain it (MS people generally get paid less than their OS counterparts, yeah, it may be different where you live, I take this from my personal exp and from what I have heard a lot of other poeple, including staffing agencies, say), much easier to find people to maintain it, and is usually much more compatible with the Win machines in the office. ASP then becomes a natural move.

7) More people know PHP than ASP. So, if a PHP developer leaves a company, than are left hardup for a new developer, unlike ASP.

These are just some reasons. Take it as you will..

Here in Europe, PHP is getting more popular all the time but ASP isn't any more so popular. Very many server-side script writers are moving to PHP-side.

This means ofcourse unluck for MS. 😉

Yes, main reason is PHP is native to linux enviornment and commanly in India and pakistan , linux(open source) is not very poper as development enviorment.
But i think as open source market get stronger ,we will be having bright future for php.

Just try promote open source.

Maybe because PHP4 is not GPL'd. PHP3 was...

It doesn't feel like a free software environment anymore. Frankly, the GPL guarantees more equality and protection to the developers than the PHP license, so maybe some of the originals jumped ship.

I am loyal to PHP because it is my mother tongue, but this PHP4 license is for the birds. It does nothing for us PHP coders.

FYI, PHP runs very well (I've had zero problems) on my 2000 Server.

Hi all,
I am pleased to recieve so many responces. But I still want to say something ..
One of the reason by which PHP is not getting Popular is, There is no institutes in India which teach PHP. I told so many of my friends about the usability of PHP but their question was " If PHP is this much compatable then why BIG organisations are not using it as they are always rushing for JAVA technologies(Like EJB etc.) " .. So I just wanna ask " can php do what java technologies like EJB and srvlets can ??" ..

Still waiting for responces..

cant get the damn thing working on windows xp but then as ms hide so much away can only rely on the open source ppl to give help my praise for open source php mysql etc as as for php not being populare try doing a search for php web hosting and compair the price as for asp(2000 servers)
and then conpair the speed results i beleave php comes out tops

Hello Tabish,
I don't agree with the fact that no institution teaches php in india, there is one institute in bangalore which offfers a very nice course on php for developers

Nowadays most of the organisations are using PHP
for its easy to use and a very nice scripting language and all the features it has!
