Large Text Fields?

I can't figure out whether I need to use TEXT, LONGTEXT, BLOB or another data type to house large fields of text. I'm creating a database to hold blocks of user comments in text files and I can't seem to get anything to hold more than a sentence or two.

What is best to use for a variable length text field?

I figured out that it wasn't the field that was the problem, but any non-alpha or punctuation type chars in the input form. Is there a way to strip this stuff out or escape it so the data will go into the table?

I'd rather keep the punctuation with the text file because I'll be displaying it in the future.
