I'm trying to get a demonstration PHP web site up and running on a standalone laptop. I need the site to generate an e-mail using the mail() function, pass the mail to a mail server on the same laptop. I then want to check the mail account using outlook express again on the same laptop.
I've installed a mail server (smartmail). I can send and receive mail over the mail server if I use outlook express (so I appear to have the mail server set up correctly!). When I try to send a mail using the PHP mail function the server shows a HTTP hit but the browser times out and doesn't send the mail. I have tried all sorts of setting changes in the ini file...
Can anyone suggest a suitable mail server (preferabley free!) and/or suitable PHP/mail server settings that I can use?
