PHP is bad??

I've heard some people say that php can't handle much traffic and lacks some major features. Is this true?

I can build a web server for <$1000 that can handle about 50 to 100 transactions a second with PHP and postgresql. That means about 1,000 active human users at a time.

The most important thing is good application design (independent of the language) and optimizing each section as you write it for best performance.

Almost any language can flood a T1 line, and if you're flooding a T1 line, your bandwidth costs are what you should be worried about.

Maintainability is more important for most sites than speed, and PHP is as good or bad as any language there, i.e. the individual programmer is the most important factor there.

SourceForge.net's 30,000,000 page views per month enough? Or that DialPad, Ericsson, NASA, Volvo, Sony, Mitsubishi, the US Army, the W3C, the New York Yankees, Southwestern Bell use it today with more signing up every hour? Or Netcraft's report that PHP is the fastest growing server side technology rising from about 1M domains to over 6M since Jan of 2000?

PHP is kicking every other web technology's butt. IMO. And can handle just about any load you want to throw at it. eWeek confirms it is the fastest performing server side technology (about 3 to 1 over JSP pages for instance).

Odd question and vague question.

However, php is very robust can do virtually everyting you can do with perl and asp...but much quicker development.

As far as speed...php4 is blazing quick and can handle virtually any amount of traffic. You have to remember that any server has a limit how much traffic it can handle.

If your e-bay or amazon your not using just one server...but dozens. PHP makes as effecient use of server resources and is as fast you could ever want for the vast majority of applications you'd be using it for.

Because php parses rapidly it actuall free up processor time better than other technologies such as jsp. Why jsp even exists is a mystery to me!

As far as lacking features - not likely. I've been using php for over a year and I haven's found anything that can't be done with it...from e-commerce, database driven sites and for auto-graphic manipulation functions you can't find anything better than the gd and php combo.

There are thousands of large companies that rely on php for virtually all programming needs...you can't argue with numbers (well unless your talking about MS).

Why does JSP exist? Becuase companies (Sun and others) can make money off of it. PHP is free, so nobody is interested... and the "free" word scares some buisiness execs that have no idea when it comes to technology.. they listen to the salesmen... and if it costs a lot, it must be the answer. PHP blows JSPs away both in development time and efficiency..... What more could you ask for... cheaper all around.
