Q1.what is the difference between a linux KDE session and a gnome session and why are they there ?

Q2.How do you mount a drive (floppy or CD)

Q3why am I not able to type anything when open a VI editor eg: vi myfilename. when I ls in the same directory then I get the file size as 0kb

Q4 How do I set the hostname of a linux machine connected to a windows networkand be able to ping it from a windows network using its hostname, currently I am able to & from other machines by using the IP address only and not thru the names of the respecitve machines

This site has a lot of links on linux which means ppl who know more about linux than I do come here and I thought they who showed interest in the subject of my query would give similar interest in answering them.

To mount a drive do:....

mount /mnt/[cdrom|floppy]

cd /mnt/[cdrom|floppy]

To Unmount

cd ..

umount /mnt/[cdrom|floppy]
