when i try to edit a php file, i just get a bunch of garbage instead of text. what does this mean?

OK...sorry.

I see a file named something.php. I open the file with a text editor, such as vi or pico. Instead of the normal code, I see a bunch of symbols and meaningless characters.

It's similar to the way a binary file appears when opened in a text editor.

It may be a problem with the encoding on your machine. But it's also possible, that this file is on a webserver... And then if you open this file, the real PHP code is lost in garbage, or you won't see any script

Yep...you got it! I am running apache, and the file is in the doc root. So, do you know how I can edit the file?

Nevermind...i just discovered that the files were encoded with Zend. Sorry!
